Sometime during the summer of 2005 someone handed Fiona a copy of the Anita Baker video that Zach and I did. Sometime shortly thereafter she called Zach and asked us to do the same thing with one of her songs, adding that she would include it as a DVD extra on the forthcoming release of Extraordinary Machine. I have to admit that this little video stands out as one of the highlights of my career. One of the first things Fiona said when we all got together was, "Let's just agree that we'll try everyone's ideas, okay?" And with that she proved something which I had long believed to be true, that people who truly understand the creative process are nurturing and open. We all decided that the video would mainly feature Zach by himself, with perhaps one or two shots of Fiona at the beginning or end. In fact, days after filming the footage you see here, Zach and I went on tour to shoot Comedians of Comedy the tv show. We stole footage of Zach lip syncing Fiona's song across the Eastern Seaboard. But the footage with Fiona and Zach together was so sweet that I decided to scrap all of the travel footage except for one shot from New York City and another of Zach standing in the Atlantic Ocean at Martha's Vineyard. Thank god I overshot like crazy in LA. Special thanks to Bella Von Phul and my wife Erin, for drinking so much of Zach's wine. |
